Azithromycin Tablets for Infection Conditions

Azithromycin tablets are semi synthetic derivatives of drug erythromycin. Azithromycin belongs to a category of macrolide chemicals. Azithromycin tablets are manufactured under the brand names Zithromax, Zmax etc. It is a drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of U.S. as a treatment to many infection conditions caused due to bacteria.

Azithromycin tablets are available in 100 mg, 250 mg and 500 mg preparations for oral administration. There are some other preparations also. Azithromycin tablets can be used with or without food.

Community-acquired pneumonia

Azithromycin tablets are given. Azithromycin immediate-release 500 mg tablet is given orally. Recommended as a single dose on the first day and after 250 mg oral tablet once a day for 2 – 5 days for mild infections.

Legionnaires’ disease

Azithromycin tablets are given as 500 mg orally once a day. Should be given 3 to 5 days for mild to moderate infections and a foe severe conditions longer duration (at least 7 – 10 days or 3 weeks)

Tonsillitis

Azithromycin tablets are given .Immediate-release is given 500 mg orally as a single dose for 1 day and 250 mg orally once a day for 2-5 days.

Acute bacterial sinusitis

Azithromycin tablets are given as immediate-release tablet 500 mg orally once a day for 3 days

Skin and Structure Infection

For uncomplicated conditions Azithromycin tablets, immediate-release  500 mg orally is given as a single dose on the first day. After, 250 mg oral tablets are given once a day for 2-5 days.

 

Acute bacterial exacerbations of COPD (mild to moderate)

Azithromycin tablets are given .Immediate-release 500 mg is given orally once a day for 3 days

Azithromycin tablets are rapidly absorbed into the body and are well tolerated when given orally. However Azithromycin tablets should be administered about 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals. Also aluminum and magnesium antacids can delay the absorption of Azithromycin and reduce peak serum concentrations.

Before taking Azithromycin tablets a patient should consider some facts. A pregnant woman, a person who has problems regarding heart and kidneys, or a person who uses some other medications or an individual with any allergic conditions to any medicine should be careful before using Azithromycin tablets.

Additionally using Azithromycin tablets in the same time every day may increase the effectiveness of the therapy. However some side effects may occur with intake of azithromycin tablets as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
